Soulo’s third album, Sun Valley, strikes out in territory far from the processing and sound manipulation of the first two albums (Man, The Manipulator and Soulo - Plug Research Records). This unfamiliar area is that of the cohesive pop song incorporating elements of tropicália, krautrock, folk, orchestral pop, and occasionally, straight rock. Sun Valley forms an exact photo-negative; representing the results of a completely reversed methodology from that of Soulo’s previous output. Songform and melody take the lead in this newest effort. Structure takes precedence over progression. Where the strength of the group previously derived from the cumulative power of individual moments and surprise, Sun Valley’s force derives mainly from the strength of the songs.

Sun Valley is beautiful and melodic but also dissonant and blurred. It is elegiac and sentimental but also ironic and funny and playful. This is not music about machines; it is music for machines or rather the people that inhabit them.

Soulo in its current incarnation is Shawn King and Scott Benzel with contributions from former full-time member Nate Flanigan, drummer Aaron Carroll (The Hong Kong), and guitarist Danny Barria (The Big Sleep). King, a visual artist, has been the core of Soulo as well as the keyboardist for the New York group The Hong Kong. Benzel, also a visual artist, is known as a producer/recordist for many groups including The Red Krayola, Destroy All Monsters, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and others.
